"[Libertarians, like Thomas Jefferson, believe in a strictly limited government:] Still one more thing, fellow citizens - a wise and frugal government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, which shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government, and this is necessary to close the circle of our felicities." - Thomas Jefferson
from 'The Essential Thomas Jefferson', p. 200, edited by John Gabriel Hunt.

[Quote No.30861] Need Area: Friends > General
"The central tenet of libertarian theory is the non-aggression axiom. It is wrong for a person or group to initiate violence against another. Violence is only permitted in self defense. Since the essence of government is coercion, the legitimate functions of government are in self defense and administering justice against violent criminals only (rapists, murderers, thieves, and those who commit fraud). Government is appointed by the people to act as their agent in performing these tasks. The people are the masters and government their servant. Libertarians don't have as much in common with conservatives as [many believe]. First, libertarians do not support an aggressive foreign policy of embargoes, covert operations, bribery ('foreign aid'), and preemptive military strikes. Second, libertarians do not support 'political capitalism' where the Enrons, Bechtels, Boeings, and Halliburtons of the world have bureaucrats in DC doing their bidding. Third, true libertarians do not support the Federal Reserve intervening in the price of credit (the 'stimulus' of low interest rates) in order to goose the economy before the next election. Fourth, true libertarians do not support 'free trade' agreements which in reality promote politically managed trade, regulatory red tape, an international trade bureaucracy, and endless legal conflicts. Libertarians do not (or should not) worship at the alter of competition over cooperation. In this respect, they may have more in common with liberals than [most] think. Libertarians believe that trade - as long as it is peaceful and voluntary - only takes place if both sides benefit. This could involve trading labor for a wage, money for a meal, time to be with loved ones, a smile for a smile in return, or time and money for charitable causes. Each party is motivated by 'self interest' and each benefits from the exchange. Even in the competitive business environment, there are plenty of examples of cooperation. Electronics firms may band together to develop standards. Professionals in the same industry often get together to exchange ideas. Libertarians believe all people are motivated by self interest, even 'public servants'. Businessmen risk their own money and are accountable to their consumers, employees, and shareholders. Politicians spend other peoples' money and are accountable primarily to the special interests who are on the receiving end of the government's largesse. When a government taxes $2.5 trillion from its citizens each year and the recipients finance the politicians' election campaigns, the conflict of interest is obvious. A businessman doesn't necessarily become Charles Manson when he puts on his pinstripes, just as a politician doesn't magically become a choir boy when he gets inside the Beltway." - Kevin Duffy

[Quote No.29750] Need Area: Friends > General
"What, then, is law? It is the collective organization of the individual right to lawful defense. Each of us has a natural right-from God [and Nature]-to defend his person, his liberty, and his property. These are the three basic requirements of life, and the preservation of any one of them is completely dependent upon the preservation of the other two. For what are our faculties but the extension of our individuality? And what is property but an extension of our faculties? If every person has the right to defend - even by force - his person, his liberty, and his property, then it follows that a group of men have the right to organize and support a common force to protect these rights constantly. Thus the principle of collective right - its reason for existing, its lawfulness - is based on individual right. And the common force that protects this collective right cannot logically have any other purpose or any other mission than that for which it acts as a substitute. Thus, since an individual cannot lawfully use force against the person, liberty, or property of another individual, then the common force - for the same reason - cannot lawfully be used to destroy the person, liberty, or property of individuals or groups. Such a perversion of force would be, in both cases, contrary to our premise. Force has been given to us to defend our own individual rights. Who will dare to say that force has been given to us to destroy the equal rights of our brothers? Since no individual acting separately can lawfully use force to destroy the rights of others, does it not logically follow that the same principle also applies to the common force that is nothing more than the organized combination of the individual forces? If this is true, then nothing can be more evident than this: The law is the organization of the natural right of lawful defense. It is the substitution of a common force for individual forces. And this common force is to do only what the individual forces have a natural and lawful right to do: to protect persons, liberties, and properties; to maintain the right of each, and to cause justice to reign over us all." - Freeman
This is the web-name of the author of the above portion of his review on Amazon.com of the small but important book by Frederic Bastiat (1801 - 1850), French economist, statesman, and author, entitled 'The Law', that was written in 1848 as a response to socialism in France. This book is just as relevant today for people who love freedom as it was then. Read it today and then send a copy to your local politician, if you agree with its ideas.

[Quote No.29751] Need Area: Friends > General
"How is it that the law enforcer itself does not have to keep the law? How is it that the law permits the state to lawfully engage in actions which, if undertaken by individuals, would land them in jail? These are among the most intriguing issues in political and economic philosophy. More specifically, the problem of law that itself violates law is an insurmountable conundrum of all statist philosophies. The problem has never been discussed so profoundly and passionately as in this essay by Frederic Bastiat from 1850. The essay might have been written today. It applies to our own time. It applies in all times in which the state assumes unto itself different rules and different laws from that by which it expects other people to live. And so we have this legendary essay, written in a white heat against the leaders of 19th century France, the reading of which has shocked millions out of their toleration of despotism. This new edition from the Mises Institute revives a glorious translation that has been out of print for a hundred years, one that circulated in Britain in the generation that followed Bastiat's death. This newly available translation provides new insight into Bastiat's argument. The question that Bastiat deals with: how to tell when a law is unjust or when the law maker has become a source of law breaking? When the law becomes a means of plunder it has lost its character of genuine law. When the law enforcer is permitted to do with others lives and property what would be illegal if the citizens did them, the law becomes perverted. Bastiat doesn't avoid the difficult issues, such as why should we think that a democratic mandate can convert injustice to justice. He deals directly with the issue of the expanse of legislation: It is not true that the mission of the law is to regulate our consciences, our ideas, our will, our education, our sentiments, our works, our exchanges, our gifts, our enjoyments. Its mission is to prevent the rights of one from interfering with those of another, in any one of these things. Law, because it has force for its necessary sanction, can only have as its lawful domain the domain of force, which is justice." - Ludwig von Mises Institute
Product description for the excellent book, 'The Law' by 19th century French statesman, economist and author, Frederic Bastiat. 'Full of truths that are not merely relevant, but are absolutely vital to our future.' -- Congressman Dick Armey 'No work before or since has made such a compelling case for freedom. Bastiat's message will influence students of liberty for years to come.' -- Andrea Millen Rich, Laissez Faire Books

"[Objectivism is a political philosophy based on individual freedom and choice, unlike Communism, Socialism and Fascism. It is:] ...the concept of man [and woman] as a heroic being, with his [or her] own happiness [judged by 'enlightened self-interest'] as the moral purpose of life, with productive achievement as his [or her] noblest activity and reason as his [or her] only absolute." - Ayn Rand
Philosopher and best-selling author who developed a theory of individuality espoused in her novels called Objectivism to oppose the collectivist philosophies of Communism, Socialism and Fascism, she thought threatened what was best in humanity. [Quote No.29875] Need Area: Friends > General
"[The Communist Manifesto outlines Marxism's central tenets. I quote them here so you can understand why democracies see them diminishing individual freedom and personal responsibility and requiring even more acceptance of government interference in individuals' lives and choices:] 1. Abolition of property in land and application of all rents of land to public purposes. 2. A heavy progressive or graduated income tax. 3. Abolition of all rights of inheritance. 4. Confiscation of the property of all emigrants and rebels. 5. Centralisation of credit in the banks of the state, by means of a national bank with state capital and an exclusive monopoly. 6. Centralisation of the means of communication and transport in the hands of the state. 7. Extension of factories and instruments of production owned by the state; the bringing into cultivation of waste lands, and the improvement of the soil generally in accordance with a common plan. 8. Equal obligation of all to work. Establishment of industrial armies, especially for agriculture. 9. Combination of agriculture with manufacturing industries; gradual abolition of all the distinction between town and country by a more equable distribution of the populace over the country. 10. Free education for all children in public schools. Abolition of children’s factory labour in its present form. Combination of education with industrial production, etc." - Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels

[Quote No.29920] Need Area: Friends > General
"[Here is why it is so important not to take your freedom for granted, to be politically aware and take your right to vote seriously:] A democracy [and the freedom it brings] is... temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. [because it 'corrupts' government, politicians and voters.] A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury [and politicians realise that voters can be bought/bribed]. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most [immediate personal] benefits from the public treasury [and tax revenue, rather than those with the best long-term interests of the country and its citizens], with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to [populist expediency, political short-termism and self-interest, financial incompetence due to] loose fiscal policy... [as well as voter complacency, apathy and eventually learned dependency on government, leading to ever increasing regulations, laws, police, judiciary, bureaucracy, fiscal deficits and taxation. Unfortunately the eventual demise is] always followed by [the nearly complete loss of individual freedom through either financial collapse, civil war or some form of extreme regulation like] dictatorship. [This continues until a new group of people find a way to bring back the freedom and self-direction individual humans need so desperately. In this way there is a kind of political cycle between more and less freedom. The cost of that freedom is self-reliance and eternal vigilance. But it is worth it, for who knows better what you, as an individual, need and is most willing to do what it takes to get it, so long as there is the necessary freedom, than yourself?]" - Alexander Tyler
Scottish history professor at The University of Edinborough. [The quote relates to his discussion, in the year 1787, of the fall of the Athenian Republic B.C.]

[Quote No.29951] Need Area: Friends > General
"Besides making mistakes, any government or government agency is not above the expediency of lying to its own politicians, officials and citizens in order to 'win over their hearts and minds'. History has proven this time and again. For example: Historians agree that the Japanese bombed one of their own railways, and then blamed it on Chinese dissidents, as a justification for war against China. They also agree that the Nazis, in Operation Himmler, faked attacks on their own people and resources which they blamed on the Poles, to justify the invasion of Poland in World War II. Nazi leader Hermann Goering said: 'Why of course the people don't want war ... But after all it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship ... Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country'. Josef Stalin said: 'The easiest way to gain control of a population is to carry out acts of terror. [The public] will clamor for such laws [removing their rights and personal freedom] if their personal security is threatened.' U.S. President James Madison said: 'If tyranny and oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy.' In 1918 American Senator Hiram Johnson, echoing the sentiments of the 5th century B.C. Greek playwright, Aeschylus, said 'The first casualty when war comes, is truth'. For these reasons, not just in war, it is important for leaders, politicians, officials, and each individual citizen to be responsibly sceptical and require the most stringent proof before supporting any extreme government policy affecting any citizen's inalienable right to life, liberty, property and the pursuit of happiness." - Seymour@imagi-natives.com

"Democracy will prevail when men believe the vote of Judas as good as that of Jesus Christ. [The great danger for any democracy - which is the best, fairest way to manage a group - is when the majority can no longer be persuaded to be moral, knowledgeable, energetic or caring but rather stays immoral, ignorant, lazy and greedy. Then the only option is personal freedom, self-reliance and free-choice of association, which will by it's results eventually lead to a meritocracy and from that another hopefully better attempt at fully engaged, persuasive democracy.]" - Thomas Carlyle

"[Politicians, politics, government policies and] The American ship of state (among many) appears to move forward by lurching too far in one direction and then like a super tanker with an amateur at the helm, overcorrecting.
