"Any single man must judge for himself whether circumstances warrant obedience or resistance to the commands of the civil magistrate; we are all qualified, entitled, and morally obliged to evaluate the conduct of our rulers [government, etc]. This political judgment, moreover, is not simply or primarily a right, but like self-preservation, a duty to God. As such it is a judgment that men cannot part with according to the God of Nature. It is the first and foremost of our inalienable rights without which we can preserve no other." - John Locke

[Quote No.42092] Need Area: Friends > General
"Whatever crushes [harmless - no force, coercion or fraud] individuality is despotism." - John Stuart Mill
(1806 – 1873), British philosopher, political economist, member of parliament and civil servant. He was an influential contributor to social theory, political theory, and political economy. He has been called 'the most influential English-speaking philosopher of the nineteenth century'.Mill's conception of liberty justified the freedom of the individual in opposition to unlimited state control. He was a proponent of utilitarianism, an ethical theory developed by Jeremy Bentham. Hoping to remedy the problems found in an inductive approach to science, such as confirmation bias, he clearly set forth the premises of falsification as the key component in the scientific method. Mill was also a Member of Parliament and an important figure in liberal political philosophy.

"The only part of the conduct of anyone for which he is amenable to society is that which concerns others. In the part which merely concerns himself, his independence is, of right, absolute. "That principle is, that the sole end for which mankind are warranted, individually or collectively, in interfering with the liberty of action of any of their number, is self-protection [and self-defense]. That the only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others. His own good, either physical or moral, is not sufficient warrant." - John Stuart Mill

"[Which political-economic system is better, capitalism or socialism, for the living standards of the common person? Most people, even Russians, would cite US capitalism was much better for the ordinary citizen than Russian communism. Are there any other examples besides the US and Russia about the benefits of free market capitalism over centrally planned socialism-communism?] ...Much the same story could be told in Africa, where Ghana relied on socialistic programs and the Ivory Coast relied more on the marketplace, after both countries became independent back in the 1960s. Ghana started off with all the advantages. Its per capita income was double that of the Ivory Coast. But, after a couple of decades under different economic systems, the bottom 20% of people in the Ivory Coast had higher incomes than 60% of the people in Ghana. [Similar stories could also be told of India, China and Israel whom have moved away from socialist governments to more market friendly ones and seen hundreds of millions rise out of poverty.]" - Thomas Sowell

"I often wonder whether we do not rest our hopes too much upon constitutions, upon law and upon courts. These are false hopes, believe me, these are false hopes. Liberty lies in the hearts of men and women; when it dies there, no constitution, no law, no court can save it; no constitution, no law, no court can even do much to help it. [Quote No.42112] Need Area: Friends > General
"The misapprehension springs from the fact that the learned jurists, deceiving themselves as well as others, depict in their books an ideal of government - not as it really is, an assembly of men who oppress their fellow citizens, but in accordance with the scientific postulate, as a body of men who act as the representatives of the rest of the nation. They have gone on repeating this to others so long that they have ended by believing it themselves, and they really seem to think that justice is one of the duties of governments. History, however, shows us that governments, as seen from the reign of Caesar to those of the two Napoleons and Prince Bismarck, are in their very essence a violation of [natural rights and] justice; a man or a body of men having at command an army of trained soldiers, deluded creatures who are ready for any violence, and through whose agency they govern the State, will have no keen sense of the obligation of justice. Therefore governments will never consent to diminish the number of those well-trained and submissive servants, who constitute their power and influence." - Leo Tolstoy

[Quote No.42117] Need Area: Friends > General
"Given a choice between slavery and freedom most people would choose freedom. This suggests that freedom is important to individuals. When individuals live with others, this is still true. Therefore the question of freedom, especially within society, has been an important issue for philosophers and other thinkers throughout human history. The conclusions have effected ideas about ethics, morality, religion, politics and economics - in fact all aspects of human life and behaviour. For those interested in considering further the implications of the idea of freedom and especially how it has effected politics and economics I would suggest that a good starting point is to explore the political philosophies based on freedom, called libertarianism. It is a very broad church encompassing both 'left' and 'right' ideologies. Having to start somewhere, after reading widely through these, I would suggest that the interested person start with the voluntaryist, anarcho-capitalist philosophy, because it is arguably the most individually free philosophy. It can then become a yardstick to easily compare and contrast all the other philosophies on the spectrums of non-government to government, individual to group, free to non-free. I found it a very useful way to come to terms with understanding the role of philosophy, politics and economics in life and it helped me formulate my own beliefs, that are, hopefully internally-consistent and therefore both justifiable to myself and others. Of the many books on anarcho-capitalism, I would recommend two classics to get you started: economist Murray N. Rothbard's 'For a New Liberty: The Libertarian Manifesto', which emphasises the philosophical and historical underpinnings, and Linda and Morris Tannehill's 'The Market for Liberty', which explains the practical outcomes of such a totally individually free society, that is just how would it look and work." - Ben O'Grady

[Quote No.42120] Need Area: Friends > General
"[Liberty is]...the power which every man has over his own actions, and his right to enjoy the fruit of his labor, art, and industry, as far as by it he hurts not the society, or any members of it, by taking from any member, or by hindering him from enjoying what he himself enjoys." - John Trenchard and Thomas Gordon [writing under the pen-name of Cato]
John Trenchard (1662-1723) and his collaborator Thomas Gordon (1692-1750) were both radical Whigs and Commonwealthmen, who were important voices defending constitutionalism and individual liberty in the 1720s in England. They wrote 'Cato’s Letters', between 1720-23, which originally appeared as weekly letters (144) in the London Journal, but were reprinted extensively and widely throughout the American colonies. They were very influential in shaping the views and concepts of the 'Founding Fathers' of the United States of America. They used the pseudonym 'Cato' reflecting their respect for Cato the Younger (95-46 B.C.), the implacable foe of Julius Caesar and a champion of liberty and republican principles. Quote from 'Cato's Letters', 1721.

"...liberty is the noblest faculty of man..." - Jean Jacques Rousseau
(1712 – 1778), Genevan philosopher, writer, and composer of 18th-century Romanticism of French expression. His political philosophy influenced the French Revolution as well as the overall development of modern political, sociological and educational thought. His 'Discourse on the Origin of Inequality' and his 'On the Social Contract' are cornerstones in modern political and social thought. During the period of the French Revolution, Rousseau was the most popular of the philosophers among members of the Jacobin Club. Quote from 'On the Origin of the Inequality of Mankind', 1754. "[Small government and free market capitalism:] Little else is requisite to carry a state to the highest degrees of opulence from the lowest barbarism, but peace [self-defense], easy taxes, and tolerable administration of justice. ... The natural effort of every individual to better his own condition, when suffered to exert itself with freedom and security is so powerful a principle that it is alone, and without any assistance ... capable of carrying on the society to wealth and prosperity..." - Adam Smith
Philosopher. Quote from his famous book on economics, 'Wealth of Nations' (1776).

[Quote No.42150] Need Area: Friends > General
"We cannot expect the Americans to jump from Capitalism to Communism, but we can assist their elected leaders in giving Americans small doses of Socialism until they suddenly awake to find they have Communism." - Nikita Khrushchev
(1894 – 1971), he led the Soviet Union during part of the Cold War. He served as First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1953 to 1964, and as Chairman of the Council of Ministers, or Premier, from 1958 to 1964. Khrushchev was responsible for the partial de-Stalinization of the Soviet Union, for backing the progress of the early Soviet space program, and for several relatively liberal reforms in areas of domestic policy. Khrushchev's party colleagues removed him from power in 1964, replacing him with Leonid Brezhnev as First Secretary and Alexei Kosygin as Premier. This is a quote from 1959.

[Quote No.42151] Need Area: Friends > General
"When you see that trading is done, not by consent, but by compulsion - when you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing - when you see that money is flowing to those who deal, not in goods, but in favors - when you see that men get richer by graft and by pull than by work, and your laws don't protect you against them, but protect them against you - when you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self-sacrifice - you may know that your society is doomed." - Ayn Rand
(1905 - 1982), philosopher and writer. Quote from her philosophical novel, 'Atlas Shrugged'. It is part of Francisco's 'Money Speech'.
